We love unique flower pots - and we really, really love unique cool looking flower pots that make us feel good about ourselves and help to save the planet. These new pots from the Re:Treads collection from our friends at River Market Pottery do just that - they're made by hand from recycled tires.
Not only are these planters eco-friendly, but they also have a nice back story - the small workshop which produces them for us was a leather-crafting shop which had gone out of business as the price of hides increased. After some experimentation, it was realized that with some preparation, tires could be used to create some of the same traditional vessels and containers that had formerly been produced in leather.
Now that the workshop has re-opened, discarded tires past the point of re-treading are brought to the manufacturer's workshop. whatever tread might still be left is stripped and recycled for use as mulch, while the steel belting is removed and also recycled. The remaining sheets of rubber are hand cut using the same leather working tools and techniques as the shop used in the past.
More than a quarter of a billion tires are trashed each year - every flower pot we sell helps to cut this number a little bit.These pots can be planted, they can be used for storage, or they can be used as totes. They are very strong and extraordinarily durable.
Side from their obvious utility, these rubber pots make great conversation pieces, and are currently sold in several boutique outlets. The Wide Basin is formed from a tire which has been stripped of its tread and steel belts. They are cut and sewn by hand, a technique originally used in leather-crafting. The stitching is a durable nylon thread and major joints are reinforced using exposed nuts and bolts. This wide basin is perfect for household storage to toting large awkward items to live goods planting.
